Mayor Michael Ludwig (SP) has just announced his lockdown decision for Vienna at Vienna City Hall. It ends on May 2.
It’s fixed: after the return of students to face-to-face teaching this week, Vienna reopens with May 3 trade and body-related service providers, with entry tests. On the situation in the hospitals, the SP city leader said: “It has improved. The situation is easing, but is still to be taken seriously,” said Ludwig.
Wide openings questionable
It is a matter of acting “very carefully and prudently,” he said. Ludwig wants to discuss broader openings in Vienna with a panel of experts again next week. A decision has not yet been made, he said. “My position is clear and stringent: the opening steps must be carried out cautiously, intelligently and sustainably,” the mayor said.
Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) has been consulting with medical experts since Tuesday morning to get a picture of the current pandemic situation.
Barely four weeks after the start of the hard lockdown in the eastern region (originally Burgenland had also participated), the situation in Vienna’s hospitals has improved significantly. The health association speaks of a “noticeable downward trend” in the number of covid patients. On Monday, 183 of them were in Vienna’s intensive care units. Over the past seven days, the number of patients has dropped by 32, or nearly 15 percent.
A strict lockdown, imposed at Easter, is still in effect in Vienna until May 2. In the federal capital, retailers, personal service providers or museums are still closed and restrictive exit restrictions apply. The rules were initially limited until May 2. This was decided jointly with Lower Austria, where it has already been announced that the measures will be lifted at the beginning of next week.
